This information may relate to customers, decision-making processes, competition, market conditions, and general economic, technological and cultural trends. The main purpose of BI is to obtain decision support information (intelligence).

The goal of business intelligence is derived from the strategy, the business goal, or a mission statement. These targets can be based on the short term in the form of, for example, quarterly figures. In the long term, you can think of increasing market share and creating shareholder value. Business intelligence is considered the successor to the management dashboard.
